Description
Wartenberg Pinwheel
The Wartenberg pinwheel is a neurological sensory tool, 19 cm long. A small wheel of fine, evenly spaced points turns freely at the end of the handle, so you can roll the Wartenberg pinwheel across the skin with light, even pressure.
Mapping sensation
Roll the wheel along a limb or across the trunk, and ask the patient to say where the feeling changes. Because the points touch at a steady rate, you can trace a sensory level or a dermatome border quickly. Also compare the two sides at the same pressure, since the difference matters more than the absolute feel.
Using a Wartenberg pinwheel safely
Let the wheel’s own weight do most of the work, and never press hard enough to mark the skin. In addition, follow your facility’s rules on reuse between patients, since the points contact the skin directly.
Care
Clean the wheel with a small brush after each use, and then sterilize it to your protocol. Check that the wheel still spins freely, because a sticking wheel drags.
