Traube Reflex Hammer

The Traube reflex hammer is small and light: a compact head on a flat handle, 15 cm long. It takes its name from Ludwig Traube, who used hammers of this kind for percussion of the chest.

A lighter touch

Because the head carries little weight, the tap stays gentle. That makes it useful for small children, for the upper limb, and for percussion over a plessimeter. However, on a large adult knee it may not give enough force, so many clinicians keep a heavier hammer as well.

Choosing the Traube reflex hammer

Choose it when size and weight matter most, for example in a pocket kit. In contrast, if you want reach, the longer Babinski or Queen Square patterns suit better. Also note that the flat handle does not roll, so the hammer stays put on a tray.

Care

Clean after each use with a neutral detergent, then rinse and dry. Store it separately from sharp instruments, since the small head marks easily.
