Berliner Reflex Hammer

The Berliner reflex hammer is easy to recognize: its head looks like a small axe, with a broad curved blade on one side. The whole instrument measures 20 cm, and the grooved handle gives a secure grip when you wear gloves.

Why the axe shape helps

The curved blade spreads the blow along a tendon, so you do not need to land on one exact point. Meanwhile, the narrow edge concentrates the tap for small targets such as the brachioradialis. In practice, that makes one hammer cover most of a routine upper and lower limb exam.

Choosing a Berliner reflex hammer

Pick this pattern if you like a hammer with a clear top and bottom, because the blade shape tells you by touch which side faces the patient. On the other hand, clinicians who rotate the hammer between taps often prefer the round Babinski or Queen Square heads. Also compare the Taylor pattern, which has a similar idea in rubber.

Care

Clean the head and handle after every patient with a neutral detergent. Then rinse, dry fully, and store the hammer so the blade edge does not rub against other instruments.
