Duplex Stethoscope

The Duplex stethoscope has a dual head: a flat diaphragm on one side and an open bell on the other. You turn the Duplex stethoscope’s head to switch between them, so one instrument covers a full cardiac, chest and abdominal examination.

Bell and diaphragm

Press the diaphragm firmly for high pitched sounds, such as breath sounds, bowel sounds and most heart sounds. Then turn to the bell and rest it lightly on the skin for low pitched sounds, for example certain murmurs and extra heart sounds. As a result, you hear more of the range without changing instruments.

Adult or pediatric Duplex stethoscope

The Adult version has a full size chest piece for adult chests. In contrast, the Baby (Pediatric) version has a smaller head that sits between the ribs of infants and small children. Both carry the same price, so choose by the patients you see most.

Care

Wipe the chest piece and ear tips between patients. Also check that the head clicks fully into place, since a half turned head blocks the sound.
