Description
Pinard Stethoscope
The Pinard stethoscope is a simple horn for listening to the fetal heart. You place the wide bell on the abdomen, rest your ear on the flat end, and let the Pinard stethoscope carry the sound directly to you.
Why midwives still use it
It needs no battery, no gel and no power, so it works anywhere. In addition, listening through the horn helps you locate the fetal back and confirm the position, since the heart sounds loudest there. For those reasons, midwifery training still teaches it alongside handheld Doppler devices.
Wood or aluminium Pinard stethoscope
The wooden version is light and feels warm against the skin. By contrast, the aluminium version is tougher and easier to disinfect between patients. Because the shape is the same, the listening technique does not change, so teams can mix both versions on one unit.
Care
Wipe the aluminium version with a suitable disinfectant. For the wooden version, use a barely damp cloth, and then dry it straight away, since soaking can split the wood. Also keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators.
