Description
Queen Square Reflex Hammer (National Hospital)
This is the Queen Square reflex hammer, named after the National Hospital for Neurology in London, where the design became standard. A round head sits on a long, slim handle, so the hammer swings like a pendulum rather than needing a push.
How it works in the hand
Hold the handle loosely near the end and let the head fall through its arc. Because the long handle does the work, the force stays low and repeatable, and you can compare left and right sides with confidence. Also, the round head has no front or back, so you never need to check which way it faces.
Choosing a size of Queen Square reflex hammer
Currently, the listing offers 50, 60 and 70 mm sizes. As a rule, a larger size gives more weight and suits adult knees and ankles. In contrast, a smaller size gives a lighter tap for children and for the upper limb. So if you want only one hammer, the middle size is a sensible start.
Care
Wipe the head and handle between patients, and then clean with a neutral detergent. After that, dry it and store it flat so the long handle stays straight.
