Description
Moeltgen Goniometer
The Moeltgen goniometer measures angles with two hinged arms and a graduated arc. At 18 cm, it is compact, and because it is steel, the Moeltgen goniometer keeps its accuracy through years of cleaning.
Measuring joint angles
Align the hinge with the axis of the joint, lay one arm along each segment, and then read the angle on the arc. Take the reading at the start and the end of the movement, so you record the range of motion rather than a single position. Also measure the other side for comparison.
Choosing a Moeltgen goniometer
Choose it when you want a compact, rigid goniometer that does not flex. By contrast, the Collin goniometer has longer arms for large joints, and the Carroll pattern suits the fingers. Many clinics therefore keep one of each.
Care
Wipe the arms after each patient, and clean the hinge. Keep the arc free of scratches, since a marked scale is hard to read. Also check the hinge now and then, because a loose hinge lets the arms drift during a reading.
