Description
Townley Caliper
The Townley caliper is a sliding bone caliper for orthopedic surgery. Its jaws close on bone, and the scale reads the size directly, so the Townley caliper helps you choose the right implant component during the procedure.
In the operating room
Surgeons commonly use it to measure the femoral head or other bone dimensions before selecting a prosthesis size. Because the jaws slide rather than pivot, the reading stays square to the bone. As a result, you get a direct diameter rather than an estimate.
Using the Townley caliper
Open the jaws wider than the bone, close them gently until both touch, and then read the scale. Take more than one reading at different angles, since bone is rarely a perfect circle, and note any difference between them. Also record the largest value, and check it against the trial components before final selection.
Care
Clean the slide and jaws after use, since bone debris lodges in the track. Then dry fully and sterilize to your protocol.
