Buck Reflex Hammer
The Buck reflex hammer combines three tests in one instrument. A T shaped head handles the reflexes, while the knurled handle holds a needle at one end and a small brush at the other.
Three tests, one instrument
First, test the tendon reflexes with either face of the head. Then unscrew the needle for pinprick sensation and the brush for light touch. As a result, a full screening exam fits in one coat pocket, which is why the Buck hammer is common in clinics and on wards.
Choosing a Buck reflex hammer
Both the 18 cm and 20 cm versions carry the same tools. The shorter one packs more easily, whereas the longer one gives a smoother swing on large tendons. Also check your policy for the needle, since many facilities require a new or cleaned tip for each patient.
Care
Remove the needle and brush before cleaning. Then wash the head and handle with a neutral detergent, rinse, dry fully, and screw the parts back in.
