Description
Bertillon Caliper
The Bertillon caliper is a large spreading caliper, 33 cm long, with curved arms that meet at rounded tips. Alphonse Bertillon introduced this design to measure the head, and the Bertillon caliper is still a standard tool in anthropometry.
What it measures
Place the tips on two landmarks, for example front to back or side to side on the head, and then read the scale at the hinge. Because the arms curve, they clear the surface between the points, so you get a true straight line distance. It also suits other body widths.
Using a Bertillon caliper
Rest the tips lightly, since pressing on soft tissue shortens the reading. Take each measurement twice, and then record the average. Also use the same landmarks each time, so readings compare over time.
Care
Wipe the tips after each person, and clean the hinge and scale. Store the caliper closed and flat to protect the arms. Before each session, also close the tips and check that the scale reads zero.
