Description
Wallich Ovum Curette
The Wallich ovum curette brings extra length to uterine evacuation, at about 42 cm. Its 19 mm head clears retained products of conception.
Why the extra length
A longer shaft keeps the operator farther from the perineum. So this curette suits a larger uterus, such as after a later pregnancy. Also, the added reach helps when the fundus sits high.
The 19 mm head
A 19 mm head covers a wide area with each pass. Therefore, the cervix needs enough dilation to admit it. Meanwhile, smaller figures of other patterns suit narrower canals.
Role in the set
Clinicians often keep it with placenta forceps for postpartum or late evacuation. In addition, a Sims or Graves speculum opens the view. Then a tenaculum holds the cervix steady.
Choosing between curettes
A Wallich ovum curette serves cases that need reach more than a range of sizes. By contrast, the Cuzzi pattern comes in three widths at 30 cm. So many departments stock one of each.
Cleaning Wallich ovum curette
Wipe the long shaft end to end before the curette goes to decontamination. Next, check the whole length for bends by rolling it on a flat surface. Finally, dry it and store it flat in a long tray or rack.
