Cuzzi Ovum Curette, Toothed Back

The Cuzzi ovum curette is a blunt 30 cm curette with a toothed back. Clinicians use it to evacuate retained products of conception.

Blunt edge, toothed back

The working end has a blunt edge for clearing the uterine cavity. Meanwhile, the back carries teeth that give extra purchase on adherent tissue. So one instrument offers two working surfaces.

Three figure sizes

Fig 1 measures 14.5 mm, Fig 2 measures 18 mm and Fig 3 measures 20 mm. Therefore, the surgeon can match the head to the cervical dilation. Also, a narrow head suits an earlier pregnancy.

A 30 cm reach

The length gives access to the upper cavity through a speculum. Then the operator’s fingers stay well away from the perineum. As a result, the operator keeps a clear view down the canal.

Blunt or sharp

Because retained tissue can be soft, many clinicians prefer a blunt edge. In addition, a blunt Cuzzi ovum curette clears tissue rather than cutting into it. However, the choice between blunt and sharp rests with the surgeon.

Care of Cuzzi ovum curette

Pay close attention to the teeth on the back, where debris can lodge. Next, brush between them under running water and check each one for damage. Then dry the curette and store it so the head does not knock against other instruments.
