University of Michigan Probes
The University of Michigan probe, often just called the Michigan probe, is a classic periodontal probe with millimetre markings for reading pocket depth during charting. This page groups six versions from the supplier’s probe pages and sets. Each probe is examined by our Georgia team before it is sent, so US inspection is part of the order.
Probing With a Michigan Pattern
First, insert the tip gently into the sulcus, parallel to the long axis of the tooth. Next, walk it around each surface in small steps. You then read the depth where the gingival margin meets the markings. Because the reading drives the chart, using one probe pattern visit after visit makes results easier to compare.
Plain and S Pattern
The Plain option is the Michigan probe as the catalogue lists it on its probe page, without an added figure number. The S Pattern, meanwhile, is the version supplied as a set component. Choose S Pattern when you are replacing an instrument from one of our sets and want an exact match.
The Numbered Figures: 23, 17, 16 and 3
These four options appear on the catalogue’s periodontal probes page under the Michigan name with figure numbers. The catalogue does not describe each figure in words. Therefore, compare the product photos to see the tip and any second working end before you order. Many hygienists try one figure, then standardize every operatory on it.
Each one is drawn from ASTM F899 stainless and goes out unsterilized, so reprocess it before charting. Every version here also comes with cover for three years against manufacturing defects. Useful links include the ASTM F899 standard, our Diagnostic, Periodontal & Restorative Instruments range, and Williams periodontal probes for a different marking scheme. See the FAQs for help.
Periodontal probes are for trained hygienists and dentists. Marking care tips sit on care and sterilization, and delivery details on shipping and delivery.
