Tuohy Biopsy Needle

The Tuohy needle has a curved Huber tip at its working end. That curve sends a catheter or instrument out sideways instead of straight ahead.

The Huber tip

A straight bevel points a catheter along the line of the shaft. By contrast, the curved tip turns it out at an angle. So you can guide the path of whatever passes through the bore.

Three diameters

Choose 1.2, 1.4 or 1.6 mm to suit the bore you need. Also, a wider diameter admits a larger catheter or fine instrument. However, a finer size makes a smaller puncture in the tissue.

75 mm length

Every size shares a 75 mm length from hub to tip. As a result, depth control feels the same across the whole range. Then you can switch diameters without relearning the feel of the instrument.

Choosing a size

Start with the catheter or instrument you plan to pass through the Tuohy needle. Then pick the smallest diameter that admits it without force. That way, the puncture stays as small as the task allows.

Cleaning Tuohy needle

Flush the bore right after use so nothing hardens inside. Next, clear the curved tip carefully, since the bend can trap debris. Finally, dry the instrument inside and out and cap the point before storage.
