Tofflemire Matrix Retainers

For many dental teams, the Tofflemire matrix retainer is the default way to rebuild a missing proximal wall. A band loops through the head, wraps the tooth, and tightens with the outer knob. A second knob locks the band in the vise, so it does not slip during packing. As a result, the band holds its shape while you place amalgam or composite.

Universal, Junior and Senior Frames

The figure numbers in the catalogue identify three classic frames. Fig. 1 is the Universal, the all-round size most offices stock first. Fig. 2 is the Junior, a smaller frame that suits small teeth and tighter mouths. Fig. 3 is the Senior, the largest of the three. So a practice treating both children and adults often keeps the Junior and Universal side by side.

The 45 mm and 60 mm Adjustable Versions

Two further options come from the catalogue’s adjustable section:

• Junior, 45 mm
• Universal, 60 mm

These carry the same Junior and Universal names, with a listed length in place of a figure number. Because the catalogue gives no other differences, compare the product photos when deciding between a figure frame and an adjustable one.

Getting a Snug Band

Thread the band so the narrower edge faces the gingiva. Then slide the loop over the tooth and turn the outer knob until it fits. Next, insert a wedge and burnish the contact. When finished, loosen the inner knob and lift the retainer away before easing the band out.
