Description
Thole Pelvimeter
The Thole pelvimeter measures pelvic diameters so the clinician can record the size of the maternal pelvis. It comes in a single size for routine obstetric assessment.
What it measures
Obstetricians and midwives use pelvimetry to estimate the room available for birth. So this instrument gives a direct reading between two points on the pelvis. Then the clinician enters the figures in the antenatal notes.
One size for every case
This pattern comes in a single size, so ordering stays simple. Also, one Thole pelvimeter can serve a whole antenatal clinic. Plus, a spare fits neatly in a teaching kit.
For teaching
Midwifery schools often use pelvimeters to show pelvic landmarks. Therefore, the instrument suits skills labs as well as clinic rooms. Students can practice on a pelvic model before they see patients.
Taking a reading
First, locate the bony landmarks you plan to measure. Next, position the Thole pelvimeter gently and note the distance. Finally, repeat the measurement to confirm it before you record it. Also, a teaching clinic can keep one beside its obstetric models for hands-on practice.
Cleaning Thole pelvimeter
Wipe the contact points after every patient. Then clean the whole instrument according to your clinic’s protocol and let it dry. Keep it in a drawer or case where nothing presses on it.
