Description
De Lee Pelvimeter
The De Lee pelvimeter measures internal pelvic dimensions rather than external ones. Its main task is the diagonal conjugate, a key figure in clinical pelvimetry.
The diagonal conjugate
The diagonal conjugate runs from the lower edge of the pubic symphysis to the sacral promontory. So it gives an indirect guide to the true inlet diameter. Clinicians then estimate the obstetric conjugate from that reading.
Internal versus external
External pelvimeters span points on the skin. By contrast, the De Lee pelvimeter works during a vaginal examination. As a result, it reaches landmarks that a caliper cannot touch.
One size
This instrument comes in a single size. Also, that keeps ordering and replacement simple for a busy clinic. Plus, teaching labs can match one model across every station.
Using it gently
Explain each step to the patient before you begin. Then move slowly, watch her comfort, and stop if she reports any pain. Next, record the reading and note any difficulty in the chart.
Looking after De Lee pelvimeter
Because this instrument enters the vagina, reprocess the De Lee pelvimeter fully after each patient. First, rinse off gel and fluid, then clean all surfaces by hand. Finally, sterilize it and store it dry in a closed tray.
