Description
Collin Pelvimeter
The Collin pelvimeter works like a caliper, spanning the pelvis from one bony point to another. Clinicians use it to take external pelvic measurements during antenatal assessment.
Caliper design
A caliper reaches around the body to span two points. So it can measure distances that a straight rule cannot reach. For example, it suits the gap between the iliac crests.
External pelvimetry
External readings give a quick outline of pelvic size. However, clinicians usually interpret them alongside a full examination. Because of that, the Collin pelvimeter often appears in teaching sets too.
Single size
This pattern comes in one size for the adult pelvis. Also, a single model keeps training consistent across a class. Then every student works from the same reference.
Good technique
Ask the patient to lie comfortably before you start. Next, find each landmark by touch, then rest the Collin pelvimeter points on them lightly. Finally, write the figure down straight away.
Reprocessing Collin pelvimeter
Clean the points that touch the skin between patients. Also, wipe the full caliper with a suitable disinfectant, then let it dry. Store it closed in a padded case so the two arms keep their alignment over years of use.
