Description
Wertheim Gynecological Scissors
Wertheim scissors are gynecological dissecting scissors with curved blades. Surgeons can choose a 15, 20 or 23 cm length for superficial or deep pelvic work.
Curved for dissection
The curve lets the blades follow tissue planes during dissection. So the surgeon can spread and cut with the tips in view. Also, it helps around rounded pelvic structures.
Three lengths
The 15 cm pair measures about 14.5 cm and suits superficial work. Meanwhile, the 20 cm pair runs about 19.5 cm. Then the 23 cm pair, about 22.5 cm, reaches deep.
On the gynecology tray
Dissecting scissors see heavy use in pelvic cases. Therefore a set often holds two lengths of the same pattern. Plus, a curved pair complements the straight cutting scissors already on most gynecology trays.
Choosing Wertheim scissors
Pick the 20 cm Wertheim scissors for general pelvic dissection. However, move to 23 cm when the field lies deep. So your tray may need more than one size.
Reprocessing Wertheim scissors
Dissecting tips bend if they hit a hard surface, so set the scissors down with care. Then clean them in an ultrasonic unit and rinse well. Also, check that both tips meet before each sterilization cycle.
