Straight Periotome, Fixed Tip

This is a straight periotome: fixed tip, one solid piece, with the blade joined to its handle for good. There is nothing to fit, tighten or swap. So it suits clinicians who like a simple, solid tool that is always ready.

Fixed blade versus a handle system

We also sell a handle with interchangeable blades. That system lets you change tips on one grip. However, a fixed blade has its own appeal. You get one piece to clean, one piece to track, and no loose parts in the tray.

What the straight blade is for

A periotome cuts the PDL fibres that hold a tooth in its socket. First, guide the blade down along the root. Then work around the tooth with light pressure. As the fibres part, the tooth loosens and the bone walls stay intact. That makes it useful when an implant will follow.

Good habits at the chair

Keep a firm finger rest so the tip cannot slide off the root. In addition, follow these simple points:

• Move in small steps around the whole root.
• Press toward the apex rather than sideways.
• Never pry, since the blade is thin.

When a straight form fits best

A straight blade reaches the faces you can see head-on, such as buccal and mesial surfaces of front teeth. For awkward palatal or distal faces, you may also want an angled or curved tool.

Looking after the edge

Because the blade is part of the handle, a damaged edge means a new tool. So guard the tip in a cassette slot and keep it away from heavy steel.

Delivery is non-sterile. Once it clears a wash and sterilization, it is ready for the next patient, and the next. We have this fixed-tip tool produced to our specification from stainless steel conforming to ASTM F899, then checked by hand in the United States.
