Periotome Handle & Blades

With interchangeable periotome blades, you keep one grip and simply change the tip. A periotome blade is very thin. You push it into the PDL space to cut the fibres, so the tooth loosens with little harm to the socket walls.

The parts you can order

Each part comes on its own, so you can buy only what you need:

• Handle: single ended, 15 cm long.
• Blade P1: 2 mm wide, straight, 4 cm long.
• The slimmest straight option, Blade P2: 1.5 mm wide, 4 cm long.
• Blade P3: 1.5 mm wide, angled, 4.5 cm long.

All three blades fit this handle.

Choosing between P1, P2 and P3

Start with P2 when the space is tight, since it is the slimmest straight blade. Then move to P1 once you have room, because its 2 mm edge covers more of the root. Reach for P3 when a straight blade cannot meet the root face, for example on palatal or distal sides.

Socket preservation in practice

Work the blade down the root with light, steady pressure. After that, travel round the root bit by bit. Doing so keeps the bony walls intact, which helps when an immediate implant will follow.

Why a handle system makes sense

A worn blade is no reason to buy a whole new instrument. Interchangeable periotome blades let you swap the tip and keep the handle you know. Also, one handle with three blades takes less room in a cassette than three fixed tools.

Care, warranty and further reading

Both handle and blades leave us non-sterile. Separate them, then clean and sterilize each part before reuse. Handle and blades share one specification of ours, use stainless steel within ASTM F899, and undergo inspection on US soil.
