A lateral condensation spreader is the hand instrument that opens room for accessory gutta-percha cones during root canal obturation. Where the Spreader Fits in Obturation

First, the clinician seats a master cone to working length. Next, the spreader slides in alongside it and presses the gutta-percha against the canal wall. When the instrument comes out, it leaves a channel for an accessory cone. The cycle then repeats until the canal is dense and full. Because the force runs sideways, a smooth taper and a fine point matter more here than handle bulk.
