Description
Spencer Ligature Scissors
The Spencer stitch scissors are the classic hooked scissors for removing sutures. A small hook on the lower blade slides under each stitch, so the cut is quick and gentle.
Three lengths
We offer 9, 11 and 13 cm. Moreover, the 9 cm pair fits a dressing pack. Meanwhile, the 13 cm pair reaches stitches in awkward places.
The hook on Spencer stitch scissors
The hook lifts the stitch away from the skin. As a result, the upper blade cuts without pressing into the wound.
Typical uses
Nurses use them on wards and in clinics for routine suture removal. GP surgeries and emergency departments also keep them.
Technique
Raise the knot with forceps and hook the stitch just beside it. Snip, then draw the thread out toward the wound line.
Standard or delicate
The standard Spencer suits most sutures. By contrast, the delicate version suits fine sutures on the face.
Clinic stock
Many dressing packs include a pair. Therefore, staff rarely need to search for one.
Spencer stitch scissors in dressing packs
Pre-packed dressing sets often include a pair of these scissors alongside forceps and gauze. As a result, a nurse can open one pack and remove a full row of sutures without fetching anything else.

Spencer care
Wash the small hook under running water. Next, dry the scissors and sterilise them.
After you order
An Atlanta colleague looks over every scissors by hand before the courier comes. Each Spencer length carries three years against manufacturing defects. Also worth a look is the delicate Spencer pattern. One extra scissors in stores saves a cancelled case. For facts on surgical stainless steel, go to ASTM F899. For quick help, consult the FAQs.
