Description
Schimmelbusch Face Mask
The Schimmelbusch mask is a classic wire-frame mask that holds gauze over the nose and mouth. It is best known from the early history of open-drop anaesthesia, before modern anaesthetic machines.
The design
A metal frame curves to fit over the face, and a hinged clip holds layers of gauze across it. As a result, the gauze stays in position while air passes freely through it.
History of the Schimmelbusch mask
Curt Schimmelbusch introduced the mask in the late nineteenth century. For decades afterwards, versions of it appeared in operating theatres around the world.
Today
Modern anaesthesia relies on entirely different equipment. Today, the mask mostly appears in teaching and historical collections, where it helps explain how surgery developed.
Changing the gauze
The clip opens so that old gauze lifts out and fresh layers go in. Therefore, the frame is quick to prepare for display or demonstration.
A durable frame
Simple wire construction has few parts to wear out. Consequently, with basic care, the frame lasts for many years.
For collections
Museums and teaching departments value authentic shapes. Furthermore, this frame follows the classic outline closely.
