Sims Vaginal Speculum

The Sims vaginal speculum is a double ended, single-blade instrument. It retracts the posterior vaginal wall, often with the patient in the Sims lateral position.

Two blades in one

Each end carries a blade of a different size. So you can flip it over when the first blade feels too small or too large. As a result, one instrument does the work of two on the tray.

Size pairs

Choose 65 x 25 / 70 x 30 mm for smaller anatomy. Meanwhile, 70 x 30 / 70 x 35 mm covers a middle range. Then 85 x 35 / 90 x 40 mm gives the longest, widest blades.

Posterior wall retraction

The single blade holds back the posterior wall. Therefore, the anterior wall and cervix come into view. Also, an assistant or a second retractor can manage the other side when needed.

Theater and clinic use

Surgeons use it in vaginal surgery and for examination in the lateral position. In addition, it pairs well with an anterior wall retractor. So a set with a Sims vaginal speculum often includes one.

Looking after Sims vaginal speculum

Clean both ends, since each blade meets tissue in turn. Next, brush the whole length from end to end and rinse well under running water. Finally, dry it and hang it or lay it flat in the tray.
