Description
Semb Bronchus Forceps
The Semb bronchus clamp holds and closes off a bronchus during lung resection. Its 23 and 24 cm lengths reach deep into the chest.
Semb bronchus clamp: role in lung surgery
When a surgeon removes a lobe or lung, the bronchus needs control. So they place this clamp across it before dividing it. Then they close the stump while the clamp holds.
Long reach
The bronchus sits deep in the chest near the hilum. Therefore, a long clamp keeps the hand clear of the view. Also, it leaves space for staplers or sutures as the team closes the airway.
23 cm or 24 cm
The two lengths differ only slightly. However, the 24 cm option gives slightly more reach when the bronchus sits low. Many surgeons stock one of each and choose on the day.
Semb or Price-Thomas
Both patterns serve as bronchus clamps of similar length. For example, some surgeons choose the Semb bronchus clamp for its extra centimeter of reach. In addition, trying both helps a team settle on a favorite.
Care of Semb bronchus clamp
Clean the jaws carefully to remove mucus and tissue after lung surgery. Next, check the tips for alignment and any damage that could affect the hold. Store the clamp flat in a long tray so it stays straight.
