Elastic Separating Pliers

Before bands go on, the molars need a little room, and these elastic separating pliers make that step quick. The beaks hook inside a small elastic ring, then open to stretch it thin. Next, the clinician flosses the stretched ring through the contact and releases the grip. The ring then sits around the contact and gently opens space over the following days.

How the Beaks Hold a Separator

Each beak ends in a narrow tip that catches the inside of the ring. When you squeeze the handles, the tips move apart rather than together, so the elastic stretches into a slim oval. That oval is thin enough to slide through a firm contact. Once one side is below the contact point, a light release lets the ring snap into place.
