Description
Schweigger Capsular Forceps
The Schweigger capsular forceps gives you a choice of 4 x 5 or 5 x 6 teeth. Both come in a 10 cm length. The rows of teeth spread the grip across tissue. So this pattern suits capsule and membrane work where a broad hold helps.
4 x 5 teeth
Four teeth meet five on the other jaw. As a result, the bite stays wide but a little narrower than the larger row. Many users find it a good general choice.
5 x 6 teeth
Five teeth meet six. Therefore, the hold spreads even further across the tissue. Choose it when you want the widest grip, or when tissue is thin and prone to tear at a single point.
How to choose a tooth count
Think about the width of tissue you usually hold. For narrow strips, the 4 x 5 is enough. However, for broader membranes, the 5 x 6 gives more control. Some surgeons keep both.

Schweigger in the hand
At 10 cm, the forceps balances well in a pencil grip. Also, its length gives room over a speculum. Then you can close the jaws flat and lift the tissue evenly.
Cleaning the teeth
Teeth trap debris in their gaps. For this reason, brush across them under running water. After that, use an ultrasonic bath if available, and check each tooth with a loupe.
Schweigger ordering details
Both tooth patterns ship non-sterile. Every Schweigger version earns three years against manufacturing defects. Schweigger steel follows ASTM F899. For a plain or toothed option, see the Elschnig capsule forceps. Our ophthalmic range and customer questions page can help further.
