The Rydel-Seiffer tuning fork turns a simple vibration test into a number. Its clamps carry a small triangle scale from 0 to 8, so you can read how long the patient still feels the vibration and record a score.

How the scale works

With the clamps fitted, the fork vibrates at 64 Hz; without them, it runs at 128 Hz. Strike it, place the foot on a bony point such as the big toe, and ask the patient to say when the buzz stops. At that moment, read the point where the two triangles on the clamp appear to cross. As a result, you get a score you can compare between visits.

Which Rydel-Seiffer tuning fork option?

The listing offers the fork without clamps, or with C64 or C128 clamps. Most neuropathy protocols, for example screening of the feet in people with diabetes, call for the graduated 64 Hz setup. However, check the protocol your service follows before you order, since the clamp decides the pitch.

Care

Keep the clamps tight and square on the prongs, since a loose clamp reads wrongly. Also avoid striking the fork on hard surfaces. Clean the foot after each patient, especially after testing the feet.
