Routurier wisdom forceps are a handed pattern for the lower arch. There are four figures in two pairs. We sell the four individually; start with one side and add the other later.

Two pairs, four figures

• 22½ L: lower molars on the left, so you can keep a whole tooth intact.
• 22½ R: lower molars on the right, the mirror of 22½ L.
• 33½ L: lower molar roots on the left, for when a root stays behind.
• 33½ R: lower molar roots on the right, also handy after sectioning.

In short, 22½ handles the whole tooth, and 33½ handles the roots. Then the letter tells you the side.

Why handed figures help at the back

At the back of the lower arch, access is tight. A figure made for one side lets the handles clear the lips and the opposite teeth. As a result, your wrist stays in a better line. As with most lower figures, beak and handle form close to a right angle.

Crown first, roots second

Often a lower molar comes out whole with the 22½, so the other pair waits in the drawer. However, a root can break off, or you may section the tooth on purpose. In that case, switch to the 33½ for each root. So a full set of four covers both outcomes on both sides.

Seat, rock, then lift

Place the beaks on the root, not the crown enamel. Then drive them apically so the tips engage the furcation. Next, rock buccal and lingual with slow, firm pressure. Support the mandible with your free hand the whole time. Finally, lift the tooth out to the buccal side.
