Description
Rhodes Back-Action Chisels
In periodontal flap surgery, bone along the root sometimes needs reshaping where a rotary bur is hard to control. The Rhodes back action chisel is designed for a pull stroke, so the clinician draws the edge toward the handle instead of pushing it away. Intrace USA, an Atlanta distributor, offers three choices on this page, and every chisel is hand-inspected in the United States.
Why Pull Instead of Push
A pulling stroke gives fine control on the facial and lingual surfaces of the alveolar bone. Because the force runs back toward the operator, many surgeons find the stroke easier to meter. Also, a double-ended design lets you work both sides of a site without changing instruments. The catalogue groups this pattern with file chisels used in periodontal surgery.
Fig. 36/37, Its Style 2, and Fig. 11/12
- Fig. 36/37: the Rhodes back-action pair as the catalogue shows it.
- Fig. 36/37, Style 2: the same Rhodes figure on a second handle pattern from the catalogue; compare the photos.
- Fig. 11/12: a separate back-action periodontal pattern listed on the same catalogue page.
First, choose Fig. 36/37 if your protocol names the Rhodes chisel. Then pick Style 2 only when its handle suits your grip better. Fig. 11/12 makes sense when you want a second back-action shape on the tray.
Sharp Edges Need Planned Sharpening
Bone dulls a chisel edge faster than calculus does. Therefore, check the edge under magnification after each surgical day. These chisels ship non-sterile, so clean, dry and autoclave them before surgery. Each figure on this page is backed for three years against manufacturing defects.
All three are made from stainless steel to ASTM F899. You can compare more surgical hand tools in our periodontal and restorative instrument range, add TG Chisels as another chisel pattern for the tray, or visit our FAQ page.
Made available to trained periodontal surgeons and dental professionals only. Please follow our chisel care and sterilization tips and see how we ship.
