The Rehn transplantation knife is a free-hand skin graft knife with a long, straight blade. Its 25 cm length gives room for long, steady strokes across a donor site.

Free-hand grafting

Without a guard, the graft thickness depends on your angle and pressure. Therefore surgeons who choose a free-hand knife often tension the skin with boards or a second hand. In return, the knife gives direct feel and flexibility.

Rehn or Thiersch

Both are free-hand graft knives. However, the Rehn is longer at 25 cm, while our Thiersch listing measures 20 cm. Choose by the size of the donor site and your usual grip.

Care of the Rehn transplantation knife

Rinse and clean the blade after use. Next, dry it fully and store it with the edge protected.

Preparing the donor site

Apply a thin layer of lubricant and flatten the skin with boards or an assistant’s hand. Next, hold the blade almost parallel to the skin surface. Short sawing strokes help the knife advance, while steady pressure keeps the depth even. Afterward, dress the donor site as your protocol directs. Also, practise the stroke on a skin model before the first clinical use. That way, your angle and pressure feel natural when it matters. Finally, check the edge before every case, since graft knives need a keen blade.
