Precision Vernier Caliper

The precision vernier caliper takes three kinds of measurement in one instrument: outside size, inside size and depth. At 23 cm, it is large enough for bone, implants and specimens, and the precision vernier caliper reads finer than a plain rule.

How the vernier works

The main scale gives whole millimetres, while the sliding vernier scale gives the fraction. So you read the main scale first, then find the vernier line that aligns exactly. With a little practice, this takes only seconds.

Uses for a precision vernier caliper

In theatre, measure a resected bone segment, a graft or an implant component. In the lab, meanwhile, check specimens, prostheses and models. The depth rod also measures holes and recesses that other calipers cannot reach. Finally, the inside jaws check the bore of tubes and sleeves.

Care

Clean the jaws and the slide after use, since grit wears the scale. Then dry the caliper fully and sterilize it to your protocol.
