The Politzer myringotome is a small knife for cutting the eardrum. Otologists use a Politzer myringotome to open the tympanic membrane for middle ear drainage or before placing a ventilation tube.

Myringotomy means a controlled incision in the drum. So the surgeon needs a fine, sharp blade on a long, slim shaft. The Politzer offers that shape for work through an ear speculum.
