Buck Myringotomy Needle

The Buck myringotomy needle is a short, curved instrument for opening the eardrum. Otologists use it during myringotomy and paracentesis to release fluid from the middle ear.

A shorter needle

At 15 cm, the Buck is shorter than many paracentesis needles. As a result, some clinicians find it easy to steady. It still reaches the drum through an ear speculum.

One version

We offer a single curved Buck at 15 cm. The curve keeps the working end visible under magnification. Ask us for point dimensions if you need them.

In a myringotomy

First, the clinician views the drum and chooses the site. Next, the Buck point opens a small incision. Then suction clears the fluid, and a tube may go in if planned.

Choosing the Buck

If your team prefers a shorter instrument, the Buck is a good fit. However, those who like longer needles may prefer the Lucae or Gerzog-Sexton. We can send photos of each for comparison.

Caring for the Buck

Protect the fine point while you clean it. Rinse the Buck soon after use and wipe it gently. Then dry and sterilize it with a tip guard.
