Bruenings Tonsil Knife

The Bruenings tonsil knife is a long knife for tonsil surgery. With it, surgeons incise the mucosa and then help dissect the tonsil from its bed.

Reach at 20 cm

The knife measures 20 cm, so the blade reaches the tonsil while the hand stays outside the mouth. That length also leaves room for a headlight beam. As a result, the view stays clear.

Its job in tonsillectomy

Many cold-steel techniques start with a mucosal incision near the anterior pillar. Then the surgeon finds the plane around the tonsil capsule. A tonsil knife helps with both steps.

Knife or scissors

Some surgeons prefer a knife for the first incision and scissors for dissection. Others, however, use scissors throughout. Keeping both on the tray gives each surgeon a choice.

Setting up the tray

This knife usually sits beside tonsil scissors, clamps and a gag. For instance, you might combine it with an 18 cm scissors pattern. We can suggest a full set if you tell us what you have.

Handle the blade carefully during cleaning to protect both the edge and your hands. Rinse it soon after use and wipe it along the spine, not the edge. Dry it well before sterilization.
