Plastic Filling Instruments

Composite, glass ionomer and other soft materials need smooth ends that place and shape without tearing. These plastic filling instruments come in 23 patterns, so a practice can replace a single end or assemble a full restorative kit. Intrace USA lists them in two groups: numbered figures and named set patterns.

The Numbered Figures

The first group follows catalogue figure numbers in three runs. Fig. 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 form the longest run. Next come Fig. 26, 27 and 28, and finally Fig. 35, 36 and 37. The listing gives only the numbers, so open each photo to compare the blade, paddle or condensing nib on each end.

Named Set Patterns

The second group consists of patterns that also appear as components in instrument sets. They are sold here as single pieces:

• IPP-A and CJ, two lettered set patterns
• D2 and D3, a pair with consecutive numbers
• W1, S1 and S6, further lettered patterns
• Trico ½, a set pattern with a fractional figure number
• 11 and Set Pattern 13, numbered set components

Because the catalogue names these only by code, compare the photos with the instrument you want to match.

How to Narrow the Choice

Start by matching any instrument you already own, since many buyers are replacing a worn favourite. Otherwise, choose one flat placing blade, one narrow end for proximal boxes and one condensing nib. Then add others as your technique requires. In addition, keep identical spares for your most used pattern.
