Description
Piper Obstetrical (Midwifery) Forceps
Piper forceps help deliver the after-coming head in breech births. They measure about 43 cm and have long shanks with a backward curve.
The after-coming head
In a breech birth, the body delivers first and the head follows last. So the operator applies the blades from below while an assistant supports the body. Then the operator guides the head out along the birth canal.
Long shanks, backward curve
The long shanks let the blades reach the head beneath the baby’s body. Meanwhile, the backward curve keeps the instrument clear of the baby’s trunk. As a result, the operator can apply the blades without lifting the body too high.
Size
About 43 cm makes this among the longest obstetric patterns we list. Therefore, storage needs a long tray. Also, the length helps the blades reach past the trunk.
Breech preparedness
Units that manage vaginal breech births keep Piper forceps ready. In addition, simulation training often uses them to rehearse the maneuver. However, operator training matters as much as having the instrument.
Care of Piper forceps
Wash each blade separately and give the long shanks a full wipe. Next, look along each curve for any bend or twist. Then dry the pair and store them flat with the blades matched.
