Periodontal Scalers, Assorted Patterns
Hygienists rarely agree on one perfect scaler, which is why this page collects ten patterns in one place. These periodontal scalers let a practice fill gaps in its kits or test a new shape without buying a full set. Intrace USA lists each pattern by its figure code, as shown in the option menu.
Reading the Paired Codes
To begin with, three options carry a slash or a range in the code. Fig. ST 2/3 and Fig. SCI 2/3 each name two figures, which usually signals a double ended instrument; the photos confirm it. Similarly, Fig. 30-33 covers a numbered span. Because no further detail comes with the codes, check each photo to see the working ends.
Single Codes and the Standard Pattern
- Fig. SCI SCK 6 and Fig. SH5: two lettered patterns with their own shapes.
- Fig. 0, Fig. 8, Fig. 10 and Fig. 11: numbered patterns from the same assortment.
- Standard: the base pattern of the group, a sensible starting point if you are unsure.
Matching Patterns to Your Scaling Routine
Start with the areas you treat most. For example, anterior teeth often suit a straight sickle style, while posterior contacts need angled shanks. Then compare the photos with the instruments you already use, since a familiar shape shortens the learning curve. In addition, keep one spare of your most used figure to cover sharpening rotation.
Maintaining the Cutting Edges
Every scaler loses its edge with use, however good the steel. So test sharpness on a plastic stick and hone with a stone at the original angle. Once a blade has been sharpened thin, retire it rather than risk breakage.
Before shipping, our crew in the United States hand checks each scaler. Also, whatever the pattern, it is warranted by us for three years against manufacturing defects in blade or handle. All patterns ship unsterilized, so sterilize them before first use.
Blade steel meets ASTM F899. Explore the periodontal instrument category, add Gracey Curettes for root surfaces, or read our FAQs.
Hand scalers for trained hygienists and dentists only. See the care and sterilization page and delivery page for details.
