Gracey curettes are area-specific periodontal instruments for scaling and root planing below the gumline. Each figure is double-ended with mirror-image blades. Which Figure Treats Which Area

The figure pair tells you where the curette is designed to work. In general terms:

• 1/2 and 3/4 suit anterior teeth
• 5/6 covers anteriors and premolars
• 7/8 and 9/10 reach posterior facial and lingual surfaces
• 11/12 and 15/16 target posterior mesial surfaces
• 13/14 and 17/18 target posterior distal surfaces

Therefore, most kits hold only a few pairs.

Standard, Style 2 and Mesial-Distal

The Standard series runs from 1/2 through 17/18. Our Style 2 series repeats 1/2 to 13/14 from the next catalogue page. It uses a second handle pattern the supplier leaves unnamed. Meanwhile, the Mesial-Distal options, 11/14 and 12/13, combine a mesial blade and a distal blade on one instrument. Each Mesial-Distal pair comes in the standard row and as Style 2, so compare the photos for handle feel.

AF Type, MF Type and SAS

AF Type is the catalogue’s name for its extended-shank Gracey pattern. It covers the anterior 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6, the posterior 7/8, both mesial 11/12 and 15/16, distal 13/14, plus a combined 11/14. The longer shank helps in deeper pockets. MF Type is the catalogue’s mini-blade pattern. Here you get 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8, plus 11/12, 13/14 and 15/16. A shorter blade adapts more easily in narrow pockets. Finally, SAS 1/2 and SAS 7/8 are Gracey set components the catalogue names only as SAS; check their photos.

Every Gracey blade gets a close look from our US team prior to packing. Also, our Gracey curettes carry three years against manufacturing defects, whatever the series. Curettes leave Atlanta unsterilized; run them through your cassette wash and autoclave before scaling.
