Description
Pederson Vaginal Speculum
The Pederson vaginal speculum uses narrow, flat blades. Clinicians choose it for patients with a narrow introitus, such as nulliparous or postmenopausal women.
Narrow and flat
Flat blades sit close together when closed. So they enter a small opening with less stretch than a wide pattern. Also, the slim shape leaves room for slow, gentle insertion.
Three sizes
Small blades measure 75 x 13 mm for the shortest reach. Next, medium blades measure 100 x 22 mm and cover everyday exams. Finally, large blades reach 120 x 25 mm for deeper anatomy.
Pederson or Graves
The Graves pattern has wider, curved blades that move more tissue. By contrast, the Pederson stays slim and flat along its whole length. Therefore, many exam rooms keep both patterns on hand.
Stocking the exam room
Keep a small and a medium Pederson vaginal speculum in each room. Then add a large size for patients who need extra depth but narrow blades. That way, every patient has a fitting option.
Reprocessing Pederson vaginal speculum
Wash the blades while they are still wet from use. Then brush the pivot and rinse away any lubricant or gel. Finally, dry each instrument and sort it by size, ready for the next clinic session or theater list.
