Description
Graves Vaginal Speculum
The Graves vaginal speculum is the most widely used office speculum pattern. Its wider, curved blades give a broad view of the vaginal walls and cervix.
Wide, curved blades
Curved blades cup the vaginal walls and hold them back. So they move more tissue aside than a narrow pattern can. As a result, the cervix comes into view with less repositioning during the exam.
Who it suits
Clinicians often choose it for multiparous patients and for routine office exams. However, a narrow Pederson may suit a small introitus better. So many rooms stock both patterns side by side.
Three sizes
Small blades measure 75 x 20 mm. Meanwhile, medium and large blades both measure 35 mm wide, at 95 and 115 mm long. Then pick the length by the depth you need to reach.
Daily office use
Most exam rooms keep a medium Graves vaginal speculum ready for routine smears. In addition, a large size helps with deeper anatomy or longer procedures. Plus, a small one covers patients who need shorter, narrower blades.
Cleaning Graves vaginal speculum
Rinse off lubricant and fluid before they dry on the steel. Next, open the blades and clean every face with a soft brush and mild detergent. Also, dry the instrument completely, then stack sizes in separate bins.
