Osteometer Measuring Forceps
Our osteometer measuring forceps give you a quick, direct reading of jaw ridge width. You close the tips across the ridge, then read the figure. Because the scale runs on both sides, the reading stays easy from either hand position.
Reading ridge width at the chair
Ridge width shapes many plans. For example, it helps when you weigh a site before a fixed or removable appliance, or when you check bone after an extraction. So a direct figure saves guesswork. Place the tips on the outer faces of the ridge. Then hold the grip steady and note the mark.
Why a scale on both faces helps
Many readings happen in awkward spots. However, with marks on both faces you can turn the forceps to suit the arch. You also avoid twisting your wrist just to see the numbers. In practice, that keeps the tips still while you read.
Steady habits for each reading
- Seat the tips lightly, without pressing into soft tissue.
- Read the scale square on, so the angle does not shift the figure.
- Take two readings and compare them before you chart.
- Write the figure down before you lift the forceps away.
A partner for your other gauges
You buy one piece here, with no sizes to weigh up. Even so, it works well beside a sliding gauge. For instance, you might use a gauge for tooth widths and these forceps for the ridge. Each tool then stays on the job it does best.
Keeping the marks legible
Rinse the forceps right after the case, then let it dry completely. Also check now and then that the tips still meet cleanly, because a bent tip will skew every reading that follows. A soft brush clears the scale without wearing the marks.
Because the forceps arrive non-sterile, wash and sterilize them before the first reading; after that they serve one case after another. This measuring tool follows our specification, and Intrace staff in the US check it before it ships. Its jaws and scale are a stainless alloy that follows ASTM F899. Should a flaw from production surface, our warranty on the forceps runs three years against manufacturing defects.
