Olivecrona Abscess Knife

The Olivecrona abscess knife has a narrow, pointed blade on a long handle. The length lets you open and drain an abscess while your hand stays well back from the site.

A pointed blade for drainage

A slim point enters a collection with a small opening. Then the edge extends the opening as far as you need. Because the blade is narrow, it disturbs little of the surrounding tissue.

20 cm or 23 cm

The 20 cm length (8 in) suits most superficial and moderate depth work. Meanwhile, the 23 cm length (9 in) adds reach for deeper sites. Both share the same blade pattern.

Looking after the Olivecrona abscess knife

Rinse the blade immediately after use, since dried pus is hard to shift. Next, clean it with a neutral detergent and a soft brush. Dry it fully and protect the point in storage.

Before you open an abscess

Mark the point of greatest fluctuance first, since that shows where the collection sits closest to the surface. Then insert the point of the knife there and extend the opening along skin lines. Afterward, break up any loculations with a blunt instrument, then manage the cavity according to your local protocol. Also, keep the knife in a guarded slot so the fine point stays intact.
