Description
Nussbaum Intestinal Clamp Forceps
The Nussbaum intestinal clamp grips bowel while you divide or join it. It is 25 cm long, and you can order straight or curved.
Straight or curved
Pick straight jaws for bowel that lies flat in the wound. However, curved jaws make it easier to clamp at an angle.
Where it fits
General and colorectal surgeons use it alongside other bowel clamps. Also, a pair on the tray lets you clamp both sides of a resection.
In the operating field
A pair of Nussbaum clamps often sits on the tray for bowel resections. The surgeon sets one clamp either side of the section to be removed and divides the bowel between the two. Because the jaws are 25 cm long overall, the clamp reaches comfortably in most open cases without crowding the wound. Before closing it, make sure the jaw tips pass the far edge of the bowel. At the end, unlock it gently rather than snapping the ratchet open.
Care of the Nussbaum intestinal clamp
Keep the clamp moist with a damp cloth until you can clean it. Then brush the jaws and joint, rinse, and dry it thoroughly before the steam cycle.
