Description
Novak Suction Biopsy Curette
The Novak suction curette takes an endometrial biopsy through a hollow 23 cm shaft. Suction draws a sample in through a side opening near the tip.
Suction source
Attach a syringe for simple sampling in the office. Alternatively, connect an aspirator when you want steady, continuous suction. Either way, the sample travels into the hollow shaft for transfer to the lab.
Three diameters
Choose 2, 3 or 4 mm to match the cervical opening. The 2 mm size passes a tight canal more easily, often without dilation. However, the 4 mm size gathers more tissue in each pass.
Side opening
The opening sits on the side near the tip, not at the very end. So it faces the wall of the uterus as you move the curette. Then suction pulls the loosened tissue inside the shaft.
Office or theater
Many gynecologists keep a Novak suction curette in the office for quick endometrial sampling. Also, it can serve in the operating room alongside other biopsy tools. Plus, the three diameters let one pattern cover most patients.
Reprocessing Novak suction curette
Flush the lumen with water right away, before tissue dries inside. Next, run a narrow channel brush through the full 23 cm length. Finally, check that the side opening looks clear and let the shaft dry completely.
