The Newman sphincteroscope is a short tubular anoscope. All three sizes measure 63 mm long, so the choice comes down to diameter.

Three diameters

The 16 mm tube is the gentlest option. By comparison, 19 mm suits most routine checks, and 23 mm gives the widest field of the three.

A compact length

At 63 mm, the tube covers the anal canal without going deep. Therefore it fits quick office inspections well.

Examination technique

Lubricate the tube well before you begin, along with the obturator if you use one. Then insert it with gentle, steady pressure. Next, bring a light to the opening. As you withdraw, look at each wall in turn. Also, ask the patient to bear down slightly if you need to see prolapsing tissue. Because this tube is short, it suits quick checks rather than deeper examinations. If the patient is anxious, explain each step before you do it, since that often makes insertion easier.

Care of the Newman sphincteroscope

Run a bottle brush through the tube after each patient. Afterwards, dry it by hand and keep it away from heavier instruments that could dent the rim.
