Kelly Sphincteroscope

The Kelly sphincteroscope is a tubular anoscope for viewing the anal canal and lower rectum. It comes in six sizes, so you can match diameter and length to the patient.

Six sizes

Short tubes of 50 mm come in 21, 22 and 27 mm diameters. Also, the 22 mm tube comes in 100, 140 and 200 mm lengths for a deeper view.

Choosing a size

A 50 mm tube suits the anal canal and routine office checks. However, the longer tubes reach further into the rectum. So many clinics stock one short and one long size.

Using the obturator

Lubricate the tube and obturator together, then insert them as one unit. Once the tube is in place, remove the obturator to open the view. Then withdraw slowly while you inspect the whole circumference. Because the longer tubes reach further, keep them for cases that need a view above the anal canal. Also, record the size you used in the notes, so the next examination can match it.

Care of the Kelly sphincteroscope

Rinse the tube inside and out after use. Then brush the lumen, dry it fully and store it where the rim will not get knocked.
