Description
Millin Bladder Neck Spreader
A light sprung instrument that opens the bladder neck and holds it open, leaving both of the surgeon hands free. The frame is wire rather than solid bar, which keeps the weight off the tissue and keeps the working area visible in a way a heavier retractor does not.
The two jobs it does
In prostatectomy it spreads the bladder neck once the adenoma is out, so the anastomosis can be placed under direct vision. Outside that it serves as a meatus clamp, which is why the catalog carries it under both names. The ring catch at the base sets the opening and holds it without a ratchet to release.
Care
Sprung instruments fail at the spring, not at the tip. Reprocess with the frame relaxed and never clipped shut, and check that it returns to its rest position before it goes back into a tray. A frame that has taken a set and no longer closes fully should be retired rather than bent back.
