Elsasser Nephrostomy Forceps

A slim curved forceps for the nephrostomy tract, where the instrument has to travel through the renal parenchyma with as little disturbance as possible. The shank is narrow along its whole length rather than tapering only at the tip, which keeps the tract the size the jaws made it.

The two figures

Both are 20 cm. The difference is the angle of the curve, which changes where the jaws sit relative to the handle and therefore which approach the instrument suits. Surgeons who do this work regularly tend to keep both, since the choice is made on the table once the tract angle is known.

Handling

Ring handles with a ratchet, so a tube or a stone fragment can be held while the hand is repositioned. The jaws are fine and slightly cupped, which is enough to hold a catheter tip securely without crushing it.

Care

Narrow shanks bend. Check the instrument along its length against a flat surface before it goes back into a tray, and retire anything that has taken a set rather than straightening it. Brush the jaws with the ratchet open, dry the joint, and store the ratchet released.
